Interleaved 2 of 5 barcode is one of the most popular linear barcode symbology. Interleaved 2 of 5 barcode is same as industrial 2 of 5 symbology, the only difference is that Interleaved 2 of 5 encodes information in both the bars and spaces while Industrial 2 of 5 encodes information in the bars only. It is called “Interleaved” because 2 characters are encoded in a unit of 5 bars and spaces. The even position character is encoded into bars whilst the odd position character is encoded into spaces. Thus, Interleaved 2 of 5 symbology can only encode data elements with even number length.
Interleaved 2 of 5 is high density numeric linear barcode symbology. It is suitable for encoding general purpose all numeric data.Interleaved 2 of 5 barcode combine the pairs of digits into a single bar code character. Each character is comprised of five bar elements and five space elements. The five bars represent the first digit of the pair, while the five spaces represent the second digit of the pair.
Interleaved" refers to the fact that two characters can be represented in the same space by using the black bars and white spaces. The black bar represents the first character and the white spaces to represent the second character. When an odd number of digits need to be represented, a leading zero or “null” character is usually added to the account.
